Man Starts Facebook Live Feed, Audience Speechless While He Allegedly Rapes 15-Year-Old Girl

The advent of new digital technologies and social media platforms has been a wondrous development for humanity. However, there is a dark side to these new dynamic, connecting technologies that is prompting many people to ask: are we recklessly advancing technology without thinking of the consequences? A disturbing story has emerged from Chicago after a group of five or six men used Facebook’s live streaming feature to broadcast themselves gang raping a 15-year-old girl. The girl, Deahvion Austin, had been reported missing on 20 March 2017, by her mother who, in a horrific turn of events, would later see a video of her daughter being sexually assaulted by the men on Facebook.

Facebook’s live streaming feature has been immensely popular amongst younger users who upload live videos of themselves at events or performing ‘cool’ feats. Worryingly, the incident in Chicago is not the first time people have used the live stream feature to commit a crime. Sexual assault, torture, and other hateful, violent videos have been streamed live to Facebook viewers across the world, from America to Sweden. Ms. Austin was informed by her brother about the graphic video playing on Facebook, leading her to contact Chicago Police. Fortuitously, Deahvion was found on 21 March, 2017, and was immediately taken to a hospital.

As a result of the video, the missing person investigation has been reclassified as a sexual assault case but no one has been charged as of the time of writing. Facebook has released a statement encouraging people to use the ‘notify’ button or contact authorities if live streamed content is of a criminal nature, saying: "Crimes like this are hideous and we do not allow that kind of content on Facebook. We take our responsibility to keep people safe on Facebook very seriously and will remove videos that depict sexual assault and are shared to glorify violence". Alarmingly, of the approximately 40 people watching the repulsive video, not one person reported the ongoing rape to police.
