Man Refuses To Let His Sons Out Of The House For 14 Years - Then This Happens

A film school graduate in New York City by chance ran into a group of 'peculiar-looking' teens. the six boys were brothers, oddly dressed and acting out their favorite movie scenes. The woman and the brothers quickly hit it off due to their mutual love of movies, but when the boys told her their life story she knew she had the makings of a film of her own.

The Angulo brothers, their sister, and mother had spent the last 14 years locked up in a 1000 square foot apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Their father was extremely paranoid about his family venturing out into the dangerous world, so he kept them home under lock and key. The children were homeschooled and outings were extremely rare.

One thing saved the kids: movies. They were allowed to watch whatever they want and said they spent a great deal of time escaping the tiny apartment through the world of film. Movies and their mother's memories were practically their only exposure to the outside world.

The boys developed big imaginations and used to re-enact scenes from their favorite films. This is what they were doing after they first began to venture out onto the NYC streets alone. This is how they met Crystal Moselle.

Moselle was a graduate of New York’s School of Visual Arts. She made a documentary about the Angulo brothers, entitled 'The Wolfpack.' She spent the next five years filming them, learning about their lives when they lived in captivity and capturing their adaption to the world outside of the apartment. Moselle also interviews mom Susanne, their fellow shut-in, as well as dad Oscar, who kept his family under lock and key out of fear of losing them.

The result is a heartbreaking yet inspirational story. Considering the boys learned about the world through film, it’s only fitting that the world learned about the boys through the same medium.
