Muslim Man Sues Airline For After Being Kicked Off Plane For Talking About 9/11

There are certain topics that may make for good conversation in some circles, but those same topics can be frowned upon in certain settings. For example, having a chat about how the world has changed since 9/11 works fine in a social setting.

Having the same chat when you’re on an airplane that’s ready for takeoff may lead to some furrowed brows and dirty looks.

As the Daily Mail shares, it led to a lot more than that for Mohammad Khan, a Muslim man that was booted off of a Virgin Atlantic flight back in 2016. As he explains it, he 'innocently' brought the subject up while the plane was taxiing on the runway.

As such, he claims he was being 'racially and religiously profiled’ when he was escorted off of his flight. He’s now suing the airline.

Khan says he simply remarked to a fellow passenger - that he didn’t know - that “there's been more security since 9/11.” He would then go on to pose a question to the stewardess: “I bet your job has changed since 9/11.”

If nothing else, it’s an incredibly awkward attempt at small talk. Discussing a horrific hijacking incident that led to the deaths of many will not win you many friends when you’re about to soar thousands of feet in the air.

Airline employees are instructed to keep their eyes wide open for curious behavior and chatter, so you can certainly see where his comments raised some eyebrows. Khan sees it differently.

“I was racially and religiously profiled. It was a complete overreaction to completely innocent and harmless comments,” he said. “I know this would not have happened if I was a white man in his 60s who had done the same thing. It totally ruined my trip and I felt humiliated.”

A statement from the airline confirms that the incident took place.

“We can confirm that a passenger was escorted from flight VS103 on January 8, 2016 by police after multiple customers and crew reported hearing highly inappropriate comments concerning security,” the statement read. “This is not a decision we take lightly and although such security events are rare, we have a responsibility to report them to the relevant authorities to ensure the safety and security of our aircraft, customers and crew.”

Khan also received an email directly from the airline after he expressed his consternation.

“Our airport managers and cabin crew have documented this matter in full and they have recorded that you made several comments that caused our crew concern. We would never offload our customers without good reason and unfortunately on this occasion the crew deemed it necessary,” the email read in part. “We would always urge our customers to be wary of any comments made onboard as they may upset those around them.”

Racial profiling seems like a bit of a reach here. Did the airline crew overreact here? Perhaps, but exactly who wouldn’t want them to operate with an abundance of caution in mind?
