Man Pays The Ultimate Price Protecting 10-Year-Old Boy From Bully

A man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was beaten by a man who was allegedly bothering a child outside of a store, CBC News reported.

According to the news station, the Alberta resident has not regained consciousness at an Edmonton, Canada, hospital. He was still on life support at last report. Police arrested a 24-year-old suspect, charging him with aggravated assault and failing to comply with a probation order.

The victim, John St. Jean, walked to the convenience store at 9:15 p.m. the night of the beating. He reportedly saw a man harassing a boy and making racist comments. St. Jean’s wife, Dawn MacKay, told reporters that “John really doesn’t tolerate that kind of (thing); someone's got to protect the underdog.”

She said St. Jean positioned himself between the man and boy, so the child could escape the situation. As the good Samaritan turned away to enter the store, the other man allegedly attacked him from behind. “He just got him on the ground … and he curb-stomped him,” MacKay said. Police told CBC News they have not confirmed the details of the incident. When officers got to the scene, the boy was gone. An investigation continues.

St. Jean “is still fighting,” his wife told the news station this week. “He's waking up halfway and ... flailing his arms. They tried again this morning to wake him, and it took three nurses and one nurse on top of him to hold him down. … I just want him to wake up. I just want to know that he’s still in there.”
