Man Pays The Ultimate Price For Eating The World’s Hottest Pepper

A 47-year-old American man’s attempt to eat the world’s hottest chilli, left him with a hole in his throat. According to Mail Online, he was eating a burger that was smothered in a puree made from Bhut jolokia, also known as a ghost pepper.

Ghost peppers have a Scoville rating of more than one million compared to a sweet bell pepper that has 0, Tabasco that has 100 and jalapeno which has 2,500.

It was only seconds before he started to vomit violently. It got so horrible that he tore a hole in his esophagus. He had to be taken to the emergency room after he fell to the floor in pain.

Surgeons said the hole was about 2.5cm and on the left side of his throat. He needed a breathing tube for 14 days after that. He spent an additional nine days recovering before he was discharged with a feeding tube in place.

“This case serves as an important reminder of a potentially life- threatening surgical emergency initially interpreted as discomfort after a large spicy meal,” the Journal of Emergency Medicine says.

The man was actually very lucky because very few people survive an esophagus tear. It has very few symptoms so it’s hard to diagnose until it’s too late.
