Man Makes Shocking Discovery Hidden Under The Sand At The Beach

Texans Lonnie Watson and Mark Louviere were vacationing on one of their favorite beaches in Hawaii. Though they’ve visited the beach often, they saw something that they’ve never seen before this time around.

“For some reason there was a beam of light,” Watson told KHON 2. “It landed right on one of them and for some reason I just turned my head. I said, look, it was just a stroke of luck.”

Watson uncovered a large petroglyph etched into the sandstone. Then she found at least nine more that stretched out more than 60 feet on the beach. The DLNR State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) and the U.S. Army are now collaborating to document the petroglyphs which include about 17 figures that are believed to be about 400 years old.

“What’s interesting is the Army in Hawaii manages several thousand archaeological sites, but this is the first one with petroglyphs directly on the shoreline,” Army archaeologist and Waianae native Alton Exzabe said. “I grew up coming to this beach and now as an archaeologist working for the Army, helping to manage this site, we discovered these petroglyphs that have never been recorded. Some people have said they’ve seen them before, but this is quite a significant find.”

The Army has covered them up again and is asking the public to stay away from them.

“In time, they will reappear and we want to make sure people know that they are fragile and culturally sensitive and should only be viewed; not touched,” stressed Alan Downer, SHPD administrator.
