Man Jumps Into Ocean To Avoid Police - Doesn't Realize Mistake Until It's Too Late

Some alleged criminals will go to great lengths to evade the law. One man was willing to jump in the ocean and swim for safety rather than face police. Unfortunately for him, there was something scarier than police waiting for him in the water.

Zachary Kingsbury, a Washington resident who was in North Carolina, was pulled over in Surf City by police for a routine traffic stop. It’s unclear what his initial offense was, but things went downhill quickly for the man when police spotted illegal contraband inside the 20-year-old's car. When they asked questions, instead of answering those questions, Kingsbury jumped out of the vehicle and began to run away on foot. He jumped right into the Atlantic and started swimming at about 4:15 p.m.

A stand-off - or swim-off, if you prefer - between police and Kingsbury lasted for hours. The young man had swum some 4,000 feet from shore and was still going. Police were no longer able to see the suspect, who became a mere speck on the horizon.

Authorities sent out drones to search for him in the vast blue sea. That's when the cameras picked up the suspect, and found that he wasn't swimming alone.

A shark was swimming near Kingsbury, and officers realized that this was no longer search for a suspect. "At that point, the operation became a rescue operation," said a statement by police.

When the drone ran out of power, local law enforcement called in the coast guard and fire department for a rescue mission. The coast guard found the man and attempted to coax the exhausted swimmer, who had been in the water for over three hours by then, on board. The suspect apparently had no idea he was potential shark bait.

Authorities tried to convince the man to come out of the water, but he was extremely reluctant. It’s unclear if they used the fact that he was on some big fish’s dinner menu to get him to cooperate. They finally got him to come up on shore at the Wicker Avenue beach access in Topsail Beach. He was finally pulled out of the water at about 7:45 p.m.

People on social media were in awe of Kingsbury’s valiant attempt to out-swim the long arm of the law, and the fact that he risked life and limb (literally) in doing so. You have to wonder just how far the guy would have been willing to paddle if he thought he could get away with it.

“I would’ve drowned after 10 minutes … dude’s an animal,” said one commenter on Facebook.

“A Darwin award Winner without a doubt,” said another.

Kingsbury is currently being held in the Pender County Jail. He's been charged with resisting arrest, obstructing an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of marijuana.

If he's worried about the charges, he just needs to remember that things could have been worse. Instead of in jail, he could have been dinner.
