Man Gets Six-Figure Fine For Shining Light At Ferry

On Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard revealed that it gave Mark Raden, 27, of Freeland, Washington a $100,000 fine after authorities say he shone a high-powered laser at ferry's operators. Both the ferry master and chief mate were injured by the piercing blue light in October. In addition, one of them suffered third-degree burns to his eyelid. Yet, this wasn't Raden's first issue with the law involving a laser pointer.

In July, he was accused of shining a laser into homes and in a responding police officer's face. On Nov. 18, felony charges were filed. Last year, a third incident did not lead to charges. The FBI offers rewards of up to $10,000, for information leading to the arrest of anyone who points a laser at an aircraft.

Coast Guard Capt. Joe Raymond said, “Firing a laser at a vessel is extremely dangerous and directly interferes with the safe movement of commercial vessels and the Coast Guard’s ability to conduct search and rescue operations. I encourage individuals who witness laser attacks on commercial vessels and Coast Guard small boats and aircraft to call 911.”

Less than a week before Raden was formally fined for his actions, the Coast Guard said one of their boat crews was hit by a similar green laser near Bellingham, Washington. Cmdr. Brian Meier said in a release, “As a safety authority, we are very concerned about these incidents causing accidents or delaying emergency responses."
