Man Gets Blood Infection After Dog Licks Him, He's Now Undergone Multiple Amputations

A man from West Bend, Wisconsin was fine one week, and the next week he found himself fighting for his life. He contracted a rare blood infection that doctors believe he got from his own pet dog. Doctors have had to amputate the man's legs and parts of his hands. He's got a long road to recovery but he is lucky to be alive.

Greg Manteufel was perfectly fine at the beginning of June, but then he began feeling under the weather. He thought he had the flu, but his condition went downhill quickly.

Within days, he was at the emergency room. Doctors told him that he did not have the flu; he has a rare blood infection, and it hit him hard.

“It hit him with a vengeance,” said Greg's wife, Dawn Manteufel. "Just bruising all over him. Looked like somebody beat him up with a baseball bat.”

The infection was caused by capnocytophaga, a bacteria that is found in dog saliva. Doctors believe he probably got the infection from when his own dog licked him. The infection led to sepsis, also known as blood poisoning.

“This infection in his blood triggered a very severe response on his body,” said infectious disease specialist Dr. Silvia Munoz-Price to Fox 6 News. “More than 99 percent of the people that have dogs will never have this issue. It’s just chance.”

Once someone catches the bacteria, it can take up to two weeks for symptoms to present themselves. Once symptoms begin to appear, things can rapidly become worse. Within 72 hours, without treatment, the infection can become fatal.

As his body tried to fight the infection, Greg's blood pressure dropped. This caused circulation problems in his extremities, and resulted in his limbs needing to be amputated. First doctors took his feet, but they warned there may be more amputations coming.

"Take what you need but keep me alive," Greg told the doctors, according to Dawn.

Doctors had to then amputate Greg's legs above the knee. Then portions of his hands, which led to his arms being amputated up to his forearms. Doctors say he will also need extensive repairs on his nose, but he's beginning to pull through.

"We can't wrap our heads around it that all of the sudden, he's 48 years old and been around dogs all of his life... and this happens," Dawn said. The couple are trying to focus on the positive, however, such as that Greg is still alive. They are taking things one day at a time.

While the family is worried about Greg’s health first, another concern they have to deal with is that of the mounting medical bills. The family started a GoFundMe campaign in hopes of raising the money to pay for some of the bills. They’re trying to raise $250,000, and so far have raised over $84,000.

“Any help you can give the family will be greatly appreciated,” Dawn writes on the campaign page. “Greg's recovery will be a very long process and he will need his family by his side, they will need help financially to be able to be with him during the coming months with surgeries as well as waiting to be fitted for leg and hand prosthesis which will allow him to become independent again.”
