Man Fed Up With Package Thieves, So He Came Up With An Ingenious Invention

As digital technology advances, more and more people are shopping online. You can shop for whatever you need on a moment's notice, without even having to go anywhere or get out of your pajamas. You can compare prices on various websites, and have the items delivered directly to your door.

Because of the convenience, shopping online has become the norm for many people.

Unfortunately, as online shopping has increased, so has package theft. According to reports, some 11 million shoppers had a package stolen in the last year. More and more homeowners are worried about their packages being left on their porch.

During the holiday season, package snatching seems to increase as unscrupulous thieves actually trail delivery trucks, cleaning up porches almost as quickly as delivery people put them down.

One man in Washington state said he had 15 packages stolen off his porch in two years. Because of this, he felt compelled to do something to deal with these 'porch pirates'. He ended up with a clever invention that seems to do the job, and now he's selling it to other mail order fans.

Jaireme Barrow of Tacoma, Washington made the simple and harmless device in order to scare away would-be package thieves. "I got tired of all my packages coming up missing," Barrow said.

"I'd be at work and I'd get home and they wouldn't be on my front porch and I'd watch my surveillance and see someone running away with them," he said to News Channel 3.

He wrapped up a box like a mail-order package and cut a hole in the bottom. Inside the box, he inserted a device that he made that detonates a 12-gauge blank shotgun shell. When the box is pulled, it triggers the device.

"It's just like any alarm system. It's just a loud noise and it deters theft, but it just happens to be a 12-gauge blank in this case,” said Barrows.

The shell is not harmful, but it's pretty scary if you're not expecting it. He demonstrates his invention's effectiveness by leaving it on his porch and filming his front doorstep from two different angles.

No less than three thieves showed up, one at a time, to attempt to steal the seemingly innocent brown package. When they pulled it, though, the device went off and a loud 'bang' could be heard.

Immediately, the thieves dropped the packages and tried to get away as fast as they could. Two even fell in their hasty attempt to escape.

Some are skeptical of the man's videos, and his claims that he's robbed so often. He lives on a fairly busy street, which you would think would discourage most porch thieves.

Now that there is a variation of his product online, some people suspect that what the security video cameras picked up were staged.

For Barrow, however, it's just instant karma. He feels good that he's able to deter petty thieves, and hopes it'll make them think twice before they approach any other stranger's home.

"It deters people from coming on their porches, too, cause, you know, they never know what they have on their porch is a blank box or a legit package. So my hope is it just makes people think twice about what they are doing," he says.
