Man Does The Unthinkable To Cop When The Two Are Left Alone

A 19-year-old New Orleans man could face the death penalty if convicted of murdering a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO) deputy. According to NOLA.com, Jerman Neveaux Jr. is accused of shooting and killing JPSO Det. David Michel Jr. three times in the back after the officer stopped Neveaux while he was walking.

"We believe the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of Detective Michel warrant the harshest penalty," Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick said. "After consulting with my staff and Detective Michel's family, I have decided that my office will seek the death penalty."

Neveaux is also charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, illegal possession of a stolen firearm and two counts of resisting arrest by force or violence. Neveaux’s lawyer says his client acted in self-defense.

"We have taken the position that our client did not intentionally shoot this officer," Martin Regan said. "We believe the evidence will be quite different than what we saw in the preliminary hearing."

Regan says that the officer used excessive force during the arrest and that his client suffered a fractured eye socket, an injury to his back and kidney as well as rectal bleeding after he was severely beaten. The FBI Civil Rights Task Force is investigating the case.
