Man Deliberately Infects Grindr Dates With HIV Virus In 'Cynical Campaign'

A hairdresser from Edinburgh, Scotland, has deliberately infected at least four men with HIV after embarking on a ‘cynical campaign’ to infect as many men as he could when he found out he had the deadly virus. Using the gay dating app, ‘Grindr’, Daryll Rowe, 26, met all of his victims through the app, sabotaged the condoms he used and then proceeded to mock his victims via abusive messages.

Mr. Rowe was diagnosed with HIV in April 2015. After discovering he had the virus, the hairdresser moved to Brighton, where he, “with full knowledge… embarked on what was a cynical and deliberate campaign to infect other men with the HIV virus.” Mr. Rowe has made it clear that he was attempting to infect as many men as possible. Mr. Rowe also texted some of his alleged victims, telling one man, who had become “feverish and ill” after their encounter, that “maybe you have a fever cos I came inside you and I have HIV, lol. Whoops!”

The serving prosecutor, Caroline Carberry QC, told Lewes Crown Court that another victim was certain that Mr. Rowe had used a condom during their encounter, however, later found the condom discarded in the sink with the end ripped off: “He was extremely concerned and upset about this and repeatedly asked Daryll Rowe whether he was clean, which he said he was. That condom did not split accidentally.”

“He had numerous, casual sexual relationships with men he met via Grindr,” Ms. Carberry stated. “He deceived each of those men into believing he was HIV-negative. He reassured the men he was clean and when they insisted on a condom, he deliberately sabotaged the condom.”

Mr. Rowe supposedly met eight of his victims in Sussex and two more in the northeast; four of these men have tested positive for HIV. Mr. Rowe was arrested in early 2016 but was bailed shortly afterward to an address in Northumberland. In an interview with police, Mr. Rowe blatantly denied having the virus and insisted that he had never met any of the men he infected. After more victims came forward, Mr. Rowe was contained; however, he made bail again and went missing shortly after. Police later conducted a manhunt for Mr. Rowe, discovering him at an address in Wallsend, living under a fake name.

In a similarly disturbing situation, a homeless man has made headlines after he jabbed three security guards with a needle and bit a fourth on the leg during an attempted handbag robbery in Manhattan. Robert Percodani, 25, claimed to be HIV positive when he was confronted by guards as he attempted to steal several Michael Kors handbags from the iconic Macy’s department store in Herald Square.

The guards managed to wrestle Mr. Percodani to the ground, however, Mr. Percodani warned them that he was HIV positive and hepatitis C positive. Mr. Percodani, a known heroin user, was arrested on a robbery charge before being taken to Bellevue Hospital Center for testing and psychiatric treatment. It is unclear whether any of the guards contracted the virus after the incident.
