Man Couldn't Shut Up When Facing A Judge, So Judge Taped His Mouth

One of the first thing that people are told when they are arrested is that they have the right to remain silent. Unfortunately, some people throw away this right and take their chances.

One person facing a judge after being convicted of multiple felonies figured he had nothing left to lose, so he tried to explain his frustrations to the judge. When the many wouldn't shut up, the judge ordered he be gagged-- with tape.

Franklyn Williams, a 32-year-old man being sentenced in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday, made the judge so angry that he had officers put tape over his mouth. Williams was determined to tell the judge what he wanted to say, and even though the judge promised to give him a chance, Williams didn't feel like waiting.

Williams had been convicted of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, theft, misuse of credit cards and having weapons under a disability, court documents reported. When he was out on bail, he cut off an ankle monitor and fled, so he missed his trial.

After he was caught, he was sentenced to 14 years for his crimes. Then, Williams got lucky. He was given an appeal when the court found he wasn't properly informed on when he would be eligible for police, and he was back for another sentencing.

Williams had been through multiple trials and appeals. According to the judge, he appeared in court at least 50 times, so he should have known the routine.

During his sentencing hearing, he began complaining about his attorneys. The judge told him that he would get a chance to speak later, but every time the judge resumed the hearing, Williams began babbling.

"Mr. Williams, I'm the judge in the matter, shut your mouth and I will tell you when you can talk," Judge John Russo said.

Williams did not follow the judge's order, though. He kept complaining about things not being fair, and about the judge trying to take his life away. The judge repeatedly ordered him to be quiet, to 'zip it' and to 'stop talking', asking Williams if he understood the term.

Williams insisted he understood, but he kept ignoring it and went on chatting. The judge kept saying he would get his turn to speak, but Williams persisted. The judge tried asking the lawyer questions, but Williams would talk over him. The court stenographer couldn't even hear to take notes.

Finally, the judge began threatening to gag Williams, and it seems Williams thought maybe the judge was just bluffing. He wasn't. After he continued to interrupt the proceedings, the judge had several deputies approach Williams with tape.

"If you attempt to bite or injure any of my deputies, you're going to have a bad day. Are we clear?" The sheriff asked.

The deputies then applied a fat strip of tape over Williams mouth. Even that didn't stop Williams, though. He continued with a muffled rant under the tape.
