Man Buys Homeless Man Food At McDonald's, Both Are Thrown Out Of Restaurant

A customer at a McDonald's in South Carolina was furious when the restaurant called police to kick out the homeless man for whom he just bought food. When he spoke up in frustration, he, too, was kicked out of the place before finishing his meal.

A video of the incident went viral, painting the McDonald's and the Myrtle Beach Police Department as villains.

Yossi Gallo encountered the homeless man, James Owens, walking around near the Myrtle Beach restaurant. Gallo invited Owens inside to have a meal, and paid for two means.

The men went to separate tables and were eating when a police officer arrived. Apparently, the restaurant staff called her.

The officer asked the homeless man to leave. Gallo insisted that Owens didn't ask him for money or food; he just ran into him and offered to buy the meal.

The officer argued with Gallo and explained that a lot of customers have been complaining about Owens pan-handling and asking for food near the restaurant.

“We’re here, because apparently he’s asked multiple people. Multiple people have complained so it’s not just you. If management is asking you to quiet down, quiet down," the officer explained.

Gallo filmed the confrontation, and when the officer proceeded to tell Owens to leave, he began getting irate. Gallo started yelling at the staff in the McDonalds, telling them, "You suck!"

He also yelled at the officer.

A manager asked Gallo to keep his voice down to an appropriate level, but Gallo refused. He began yelling and complaining about McDonald's throwing out the homeless man, telling other patrons his side of the story.

Finally, he was also asked to leave.

At first Gallo refused to leave, claiming he wanted to finish his meal or get a refund. The officer explained that she was not civil court; he had to leave because she was ordering him to go, and that he would have to take up his refund with McDonald’s corporate.

Then Gallo argued that he didn’t get his receipt, which a McDonald’s employee found on his tray.

“By the way, you guys suck. He didn’t even ask me for food... I brought him from outside," Gallo shouted on his way out.

Gallo and Owens walked out together. Gallo offered to buy the homeless man a meal in another restaurant.

“I started crying, I was very upset,” said Owens to WACH. “It was wrong. They discriminate against me because I was homeless. But see, I didn’t ask nobody for nothing.”

The restaurant franchise owner had a different story; he backed up the officer and his staff.

"At my restaurant, the goal is to provide our customers with a positive and welcoming experience each time they visit. Unfortunately, the individual in this video has a history of disruptive behavior and has been asked to leave by management and police on several occasions," said the owner, Joel Pellici Jr.

Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune also supported the officer, saying that Gallo's video clip does not show the whole story.

“(The officer) handled herself in the most professional manner and treated this gentleman with dignity and respect,” she said. "I believe in our police department... I know how close they work with our homeless community as well as the four shelters located within our city limits.”
