Man Finds Baby Abandoned On Side Of Highway - Then He Sees What's In The Car Seat...

One desperate mother abandoned her newborn baby, which was a very dangerous choice. On some level, however, the mother apparently wanted to make sure the baby would be taken care of.

He was found with his birth certificate, Social Security card and $5,500 cash.

A man driving a church group bus passed something on the interstate in Oklahoma that caught his attention. Roger Prater thought he must have been mistaken when he noticed what looked like a baby in a car seat along the side of the road.

He went back to check, expecting to find a doll. He thought he would laugh it off and be done with it.

But Prater had it right the first time. it was an infant in a car seat. He called 911 to report the baby to authorities. "There's a baby here in a carrier," he said.

"You walk up on a baby on the side of the road, and you’re like, 'Wow, you think you got it bad,'" Prater later told newsok.com. "It was not moving. Its eyes were closed. I thought, 'Lord, don’t let this thing be hurt.'"

Thankfully, when Prater picked up the car seat, the baby opened his eyes.

The temperature was 91 degrees, which could have been very dangerous if the one-month-old baby hadn't been found. Thankfully, authorities say the child probably wasn't out there more than 30 minutes. He seemed to be in good health and he was brought to a local hospital.

Stuffed in the baby's car seat was $5,500 cash, a birth certificate and Social Security card. Police were able to locate the baby's family. The family members were able to help locate the baby's mother.

The unnamed mother was brought to the hospital for an evaluation. Thus far, the Oklahoma City Police are not releasing any names and do not expect to file charges.

"We don't know why she did what she did ... but people do the strangest things sometimes," said Sgt. Gary Knight on Monday. "I don't recall seeing a case like this where a baby was just left on the shoulder of a highway. This could have had a very tragic ending."

Ken Angel, the pastor of the van driver's church, doesn't believe the baby was found by accident by his group. He believes it was divine intervention.

"I feel like God used our youth group to save someone's life Saturday because we're here on Earth to fulfill a redemptive purpose," Angel said. "God stepped in."

Some young, desperate, single mothers struggling with issues like mental illness or postpartum depression can, in a fit of panic and despair, abandon their babies. Usually, it’s not so much an indication that the mother is malicious as it is that she desperately needs help because she’s completely overwhelmed.

Safe Haven laws in most states allow parents to relinquish newborn infants to hospitals, police stations and other official places with no questions asked. These laws were set up in order to protect babies from being left somewhere unsafe.
