Man’s Grandfather Bought His Home From Sears In 1916 - Look At It Now

Before there was Amazon and eBay, there were mail order catalogs. For decades, people would turn to catalogs for anything their hearts might desire. As long as you had the cash and a stamp, just about everything could be delivered to your door. Even your door. Or, if you prefer, your whole house.

One Reddit user just recently showed off a house he fixed up in North Dakota. The house was purchased by his family in 1916 through a mail-order catalog.

A picture of the old home back in 1916 features an outhouse in the distant background. A 2016 photo of the house shows an addition had been built on the side, presumably to add on modern bathrooms. Other than that, the structure of the home remained the same. Newly renovated, painted, and with some attractive landscaping, it's just as charming as ever.

Sears sold about 75,000 do-it-yourself homes between 1908 and 1940. You could order a lovely two-story, four- or five-bedroom house for about $1,000 to $2,000. These days, you'd be lucky if to furnish a single room for that amount out of a sears catalogue.

The Reddit user said the old home needed a lot of repairs, but it's now in beautiful condition, and ready to house new generations.
