Look Out For This New Insect - The Virus It Carries Is Deadly

A Center for Disease Control report says that a man died of a virus he contracted after a tick bite. Though the CDC believes the man is the only victim so far, but the deadly virus poses a new concern.

A Kansas man is the first and only patient to have died from the 'Bourbon virus.' There's little known about the virus, and no treatment or vaccines are available as of yet. After a six-month long investigation, the Kansas man's infection was traced back to a tick bite that he got before his death.

The Kansas man wasn't the first patient diagnosed with the virus, but he's the first one who died. The virus, a type of thogotovirus, replicates in tick cells.

Until now, the most concerning illness that one could contact from a tick was Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted by tick bite. Most people who contract Lyme disease from a tick find the site of the bite gets red and rashy within days. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and joint pain. If left untreated, Lyme Disease can result in stiffness of the neck and face or heart palpitations.

Antibiotics are useless against viruses, so the Kansas man who contracted the Bourbon virus probably would not have been saved even if the virus was discovered. In most cases, patients may need to be hospitalized to avoid dehydration and to keep fever down until the infection passes.

According to health care specialists, the best way to avoid contracting diseases from ticks and other biting insects is to avoid getting bitten altogether. The CDC recommends using insect repellents when outdoors. Avoid bushy and wooded areas, and wear long sleeves and pants to protect yourself. Tuck pant legs into socks to prevent ticks from crawling up the leg.

After going outdoors, perform a thorough tick check, and see a doctor if you do find one.
