Lonely Widower Asked Out By 22-Year-Old Cashier, She Starts Bawling After He Shows Up
Christmas is a time of merriment, joy, gift giving and above all, enjoying the holiday season with family. Tragically, some people find themselves alone in the days and weeks leading up to Christmas after family members are taken away before their time. However, a heartwarming tale has emerged from the United Kingdom detailing the kind, selfless actions of an employee at the popular supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s in the Leeds branch. When 22-year-old waitress, Ellie Walker, began working at the store, she was amazed at the friendliness of regular customers. One such customer was 86 year old Edwin Holmes, a retired artist and interior decorator, who frequently pops into the store to buy a few necessities and chat with Ellie and the rest of the staff.
Ellie has worked at the supermarket for 3 years and considers Mr. Holmes her favorite customer, telling a reporter from The Sun that “He is without a shadow of a doubt my favorite customer. He is the cutest man and so chatty. I thought if it was my granddad and he was alone I would want someone to talk to him”. In the lead up to Christmas, Mr. Holmes was talking with Ellie when she learned that he would be spending the holiday season alone as his wife of 45 years had passed away in 2006 and he had no close friends or nearby relatives. Ellie took it upon herself to bring some light into Mr. Holmes’ life and decided to ask the kind-hearted elderly man on a mock date.
In a heartwarming turn of events, Mr. Holmes agreed and the young waitress and elderly widower went out to dinner at a local restaurant. Ellie was floored when Mr. Holmes greeted her with flowers while wearing his best suit even though he reported that he was “nervous as a schoolboy” as it was his “first date in 55 years”. By every account, the pair had a wonderful, platonic night and continue to meet regularly over coffee.
