Locals Try to Run Mosque Out of Town

A mosque opened up in a small rural town in Wyoming in September. Local residents are now trying to get rid of it.

Residents of Gillette told Wyoming Public Radio host Miles Bryan that they are worried about the Federal government forcing the small community to take in Syrian refugees. Bret Colvin started a movement called, "Stop Islam in Gillette," and it's gaining momentum.

“Well, I don’t want Jihadis in my neighborhood,” said Colvin. “We don’t want to take the chance of having a problem. Why let them all in and then see what happens when you can just nip it in the bud?”

Another member of the Facebook group called Islam 'basically a terrorist group.' James Hance says, "Their religion don’t like us.”

The Facebook page originally contained the message, “Stop the Islam invasion sponsored by [Wyoming governor] Matt Mead and Barrack (sic) Obama. Remove the mosque and Islam school from Gillette.”

The name was recently changed to, “Stop Forced Syrian Immigration to Gillette.” The page has 350 members.

The town has a small population of Muslims, and some now fear for their lives. Colvin confronted the Mosque members during a Friday night prayer session last month. Aftab Khan has lived in Wyoming his whole life, and run a hotel in Gillette for 16 years. He says the anti-Muslim sentiments are worse than they were after the September 11 attacks in 2001.

“People have attacked my family and threatened us physically. I’m not going to sit here and deny the fact that I’m a little bit nervous and a little bit worried,” said Khan.
