Little Girl Wants Juice With Her Meal - Restaurant Gives Her Alcohol Instead

Many American families begin to become a bit more lax about their children drinking alcohol when they reach the age of 18. However, one family from Georgia was horrified to discover that their young daughter had started drinking at only 18 months old. Aaliyah, an 18-month-old toddler, was with her parents at an unnamed restaurant in Vinings, Georgia.

The family had driven to the restaurant for lunch after attending Church. Aaliyah’s mother, Alexis Smith, and her husband ordered main meals for themselves and got a cup of apple juice for their daughter.

However, as Aaliyah’s parents finished their meals and prepared to leave the restaurant, they noticed that their daughter was behaving strangely and was “not her usual self." On a whim, Aaliyah’s father tasted her apple juice, with Mrs. Smith saying: "We were about to leave, my spouse got the juice, it was in the kid's cup, he tasted it and his chest started burning." The horrified parent immediately told his wife that the ‘juice’ tasted alcoholic.

After Mrs. Smith tasted the drink herself, she quickly realized that her young daughter had been drinking an alcoholic beverage the entire time. When Aaliyah’s parents told the manager about their suspicions, the restaurant owner and manager quickly investigated, checking their storage and labelling.

After looking into the situation, the manager realized that they had mislabeled their apple juice container, and had accidentally given Aaliyah some form of alcoholic drink. “I started crying at the restaurant,” Mrs. Smith tells 11Alive, emphasizing that “As a mom, it was very emotional. Alcohol is something serious.”

The restaurant’s owner and manager were extremely apologetic, paying for the family’s meal and promising to rectify the dangerous mistake.

As Aaliyah was still acting a bit strangely and her balance was off, the girl’s parents decided to take her to the local hospital and make sure that everything was okay. After a period of observation and rest, doctors concluded that Aaliyah would be fine.

Poison Control has predicted that, considering the amount of alcohol consumed and Aaliyah’s small body, the young girl’s blood-alcohol level was approximately 0.067%, slightly under 0.08%, Georgia’s legal limit.

Sadly, these sort of situations are far more frequent than many parents believe. In Ashville, North Carolina, a 2-year-old child was recently served alcohol while eating at Applebee’s. Another Applebee’s in Michigan was the site of controversy after a 15-month-old child was given an alcoholic drink instead of an apple juice.

Aaliyah’s parents are just thankful that their daughter is okay. Mrs. Smith has spoken about the incident with 11Alive, telling them that the situation could have had a far more tragic ending. The staff at the restaurant had initially asked if Aaliyah would like her juice in a Sippy Cup, meaning that the toddler “would have been sipping on alcohol all day and possibly died…I’m just lucky that my daughter did not consume the whole cup because she probably would not be here now.”
