Little Boy Tells School He's Forgotten His Lunch, So They Hand Him This

School lunches have long been a source of friction between students, their families, and the school administration. The quality of school lunches varies dramatically across the country, depending on budget and the skills of the kitchen staff at individual institutions.

Policies about how to handle kids who forget to bring their lunch to school or forget their lunch money also vary a lot by school policy.

Many schools do not offer these kids a full lunch, but often just offer the children a sandwich and/or a piece of fruit. The quality of the sandwich obviously varies too, as a recent case from Avon, Indiana makes clear.

In this particular situation, a mother is upset after her son sent her pics of a moldy sandwich given to him when he forgot his lunch money last week.

Amy Wittaker Anders decided to make a Facebook post describing how her son forgot his lunch money and was given a moldy peanut butter sandwich for lunch at his school.

In the image, you could see there was mold on the outside and the inside of the slices of bread used to make the sandwich.

Of note, the school replaced her son’s moldy sandwich, but he said was afraid to eat it after seeing the first one.

Apparently, pretty much the same thing happened to a friend of her son a couple of weeks ago.

Avon Community School Corporation published statement apologizing for the incident:

“We are grateful to be made aware of the situation and have reached out to the parents and apologized. This is an unacceptable human error and we are looking into it to ensure that this never happens again.”

Anders notes she is shocked that the moldy sandwich was handed out in the first place. “I have no idea how someone could not see this was bad when handing it out!”
