Legendary Actress Admits Being Miserable And Flat Broke - She's Unrecognizable Now
Dr. Phil is getting a lot of slack for a recent interview with actress Shelly Duvall. The 67-year-old actress disappeared from the spotlight some 15 years ago and has spiraled into severe mental illness.
The entire Dr. Phil episode spends 45 minutes with the talk show host interviewing Duvall. The actress is incoherent, barely able to string together sentences. In a most earnest tone, she utters some shockingly off-the-wall thoughts.
Duvall tells Dr. Phil she believes Robin Williams, her co-star of the 1980 film 'Popeye', is not dead. She believes he's shape-shifted and that she's seen him. She also tells Phil the Bermuda Triangle is on her, causing a hairy chest.
Dr. Phil asks her how her physical health is, and Duvall told him if she says she's healthy, "they" will hurt her. When Dr. Phil asks who would hurt her, she explains, "Whoever is in security, or at the bank," she explains, holding up a pen and turning it over, as if illustrating something. "Doing nightwork. Who's doing off-duty police work in black and white? Taxi?"
By the end of the show, Duvall was escorted to the Creative Care mental health treatment center. She spent three days there, but refused medication. Dr. Phil is now working with Duvall's family to provide the resources to help her at home.
Vivian Kubrick, daughter of director Stanley Kubrick who worked with Duvall on 'The Shining,' has criticized Dr. Phil for ' lurid and exploitive entertainment'. She called the interview 'cruel' and started a GoFundMe campaign for Duval.
Dr. Drew Pinsky disagrees with Kubrick, saying that even mentally ill people have the right to make choices for themselves, and Duvall chose to do the interview. He adds that it's the interview that might even result in Duvall getting treatment and recovering.
