Legendary AC/DC Rocker Malcolm Young Is Dead At Age Of 64

The world of music lost another legend on Saturday, as Malcolm Young passed away at the age of 64. Along with brother Angus Young, Malcolm was one of the driving forces behind the legendary rock powerhouse AC/DC, the band behind such hits as ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ and ‘Highway to Hell.’ As Page Six shares, Malcolm had been battling dementia for the past three years.

Malcolm and Angus founded the group in 1973, and they would go on to have a legendary career that culminated with the group’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group’s iconic album, ‘Back in Black,’ is one of the best-selling records in history. Upon Malcolm’s passing, the group released a statement on social media.

"Today it is with deep heartfelt sadness that AC/DC has to announce the passing of Malcolm Young, Malcolm, along with Angus, was the founder and creator of AC/DC. With enormous dedication and commitment he was the driving force behind the band. As a guitarist, songwriter and visionary he was a perfectionist and a unique man,” the statement read. “He always stuck to his guns and did and said exactly what he wanted. He took great pride in all that he endeavored. His loyalty to the fans was unsurpassed.”

Angus would add some heartfelt words upon the passing of his beloved older brother.

“As his brother it is hard to express in words what he has meant to me during my life, the bond we had was unique and very special. He leaves behind an enormous legacy that will live on forever,” he wrote. “Malcolm, job well done.”

The brothers were born in Glasgow, Scotland, but they would move to Sydney, Australia with their family in 1963. His older brother, George, found success in the music industry as well, and Malcolm and Angus would eventually follow his lead. During a 2008 interview with Rolling Stone, Malcolm noted that despite his worldwide fame, he never lost hold of his roots.

"I've never felt like a pop star – this is a nine-to-five sort of gig," he said. "It comes from working in the factories, that world. You don't forget it."

Tributes have been pouring in from across the world of music for Malcolm, who left the band in 2014 to focus on his health.

“It is a sad day in rock and roll. Malcolm Young was my friend and the heart and soul of AC/DC. I had some of the best times of my life with him on our 1984 European tour. He will be missed and my deepest condolences to his family, bandmates and friends," shared Eddie Van Halen.

"I have to go...I am losing it that Malcolm is gone. I hate this…," shared Megadeth's Dave Mustaine.

"The driving engine of AC/DC has died. A tragic end for a sometimes unsung icon. One of the true greats. RIP," wrote Paul Stanley of Kiss.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Malcolm’s friends, family, and loved ones during this trying time.
