Legally Concealed Weapons May Expand Across State Lines

A bill called The Constitutional Concealed Reciprocity Act would work for gun owners the way driver's licenses work across state lines. The bill states that gun owners who have a concealed carry permit in their home state can bring their firearms to any other state that has concealed-carry laws. Sen. John Cornyn (Texas) talked about the bill saying, "This operates more or less like a driver’s license. So, for example, if you have a driver’s license in Texas, you can drive in New York, in Utah and other places, subject to the laws of those states."

Cornyn shares that the bill was designed to also help gun owners who inadvertently cross state lines with guns they are only legally allowed to carry in their home states. The National Rifle Association praised the bill stating it was a, “much-needed solution to a real problem for gun owners.” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action also said, “Our fundamental right to self-defense does not stop at a state's borders. Law abiding citizens should be able to exercise this right while traveling across state lines." Concealed carry is allowed in almost 50 states to varying degrees. Gun control groups oppose the bill on the basis that it blocks the states' rights to determine who might be too dangerous to carry concealed weapons in public. Cornyn's bill almost passed the Democratic-controlled Senate, but may have better chances with a GOP majority.
