Lawyer Tries To Apologize To His Wife For Attempting To Kill Her, Multiple Times

Attorney Fred Wortman, 39, apologized to his wife after trying to poison her through her toothpaste, hiring a hitman and then paying a prison inmate to kill the mother of his three children.

He was jailed for 30 years for three counts of attempted murder, but could get out after nine years on parole.

Before he was sentenced, he said, "No apology which I offer will be sufficient to all who I have disappointed, let down and hurt. I do apologize to Staci, the Joneses [her family], my parents, my family, most of all I apologize to my three precious children."

His wife, Staci Wortman, said, "My children and I pray for your daily that your heart will change.”

Shelby County assistant district attorney Paul Hagerman said Wortman's employer noticed he had been using a work computer to search for tips on how to hire a hitman by paying in Bitcoin and how to poison someone.

Wortman used plant-based chemical aconitum. In large doses, it can cause death from paralysis of the heart. In small doses, it causes headaches, dizziness and a burning sensation--which is what his wife experienced.

Police seized Wortman's hard drive and had an agent pose as a hitman. Wortman paid the undercover agent, gave her his wife's address, told him when she would be home and left potential murder weapons lying around the house.

The couple was in the process of getting a divorce when Wortman tried to kill his wife. She is now "looking forward" to legally ending their marriage.
