Kathy Griffin Begs For Forgiveness After Disturbing Anti-Trump Picture Makes Rounds

If Kathy Griffin’s ultimate motivation for posting a photo of herself holding a fake, bloodied, severed head of President Donald Trump was to garner some attention, we can say mission accomplished. Outside of that, the disturbing stunt was a miserable failure, and the comedienne would upload a video apology to social media after she was verbally assaulted for several hours. As CNN shares, that apology has done little to help justify her incredibly poor decision to pose for the photo to begin with.

Griffin posed for the disturbing picture during a shoot with celebrity photographer Tyler Shields, and the photo quickly made the rounds online. The backlash flowed in fast and furious, and scores of users were completely outraged.

“Disgusting but not surprising. This is the left today. They consider this acceptable. Imagine a conservative did this to Obama as POTUS?” shared Donald Trump Jr.

The comedienne tried to defer criticism by explaining that her photo was in the name of ‘art,’ but her attempt fell incredibly flat.

"OBVIOUSLY, I do not condone ANY violence by my fans or others to anyone, ever! I'm merely mocking the Mocker in Chief," she shared on social media.

Mocking is one thing, but the photo crossed the line into the unfathomable. Whatever her intentions were in posting the pic are completely irrelevant, as there’s simply nothing even slightly amusing about depicting a scene in which the commander-in-chief has been sadistically butchered.

Griffin is typically the co-host of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage, and the network was forced to respond to the controversy.

"We found what she did disgusting and offensive. We are pleased to see she has apologized and asked that the photos be taken down. We are evaluating our New Year's Eve coverage and have made no decisions at this point," a CNN spokesperson said.

There’s really not too much to evaluate here, as any network host that did something even remotely as repulsive as this would likely be removed from the air permanently. Griffin has gone from a curiosity to a pariah overnight, and the network stands to gain nothing by allowing her to appear on its airwaves.

The president took to social media to share his thoughts on being depicted in such a disturbing fashion, and he summed the situation up succinctly.

“Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself. My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!” he wrote.

It would certainly be nice to see Griffin and Shields accountable for their actions in some way, as even they seemed to know they were crossing the line in an unbelievable fashion.

"We have to move to Mexico today, but we're going to go to prison - federal prison...We're not surviving this, okay?" Griffin says in a video of the pair preparing to share the pic.

For Griffin’s part, she has apologized for the incident, but it’s holding zero weight at this point with most observers.

"I'm a comic. I cross the line. I move the line, then I cross it. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people. It wasn't funny. I get it," she said. "I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far. I made a mistake and I was wrong."
