Kaepernick Sets Sights On Getting Signed To A Different Kind Of Deal

We’re approaching the halfway mark of the National Football League’s regular season, and there remains no market for the services of unemployed quarterback Colin Kaepernick. While some observers claim this is evidence of some kind of vast league-wide conspiracy, a closer examination of the details suggests otherwise. Early in his career, Kaepernick looked as if he was on his way to becoming a transformative player. Unfortunately for Kaepernick, the rest of the league adapted to him rather quickly. He didn’t do the same.

Struggles on the field followed, and it got to the point that Kaepernick just wasn’t getting the job done any longer. During his final season in the Bay Area, he began making a spectacle of himself for unclear reasons. He started refusing to stand for the National Anthem, and he claimed that this behavior somehow showed how passionate he was about racial injustice. It’s unclear if his wearing of socks that depicted police officers as pigs also counts as a passionate response in his mind. The San Francisco 49ers decided to move on after the season, and he’s been without a job ever since.

As the Daily Mail shares, Kaepernick remains on the hunt for a deal, but he’s shopping for a different one these days. Reports indicate that he’s looking for a book deal, but there has been no confirmation of that fact from Kaepernick’s camp. In addition to that possibility, Kaepernick’s team has been busy on other matters. The former player has filed a claim against the NFL stating that teams colluded against him in response to his anthem stance.

Many observers feel he has a legit gripe here, but a closer examination of things also tells us otherwise. In the offseason, he had a meeting with the Seattle Seahawks, who just so happened to be in the market for a backup quarterback. Based on the fact that Kaepernick’s skills have declined precipitously, securing a gig with a team that’s consistently competitive isn’t a bad deal - even if that team has a player firmly entrenched as its starting quarterback. Alas, a deal wasn’t reached, and Kaepernick was free to seek deals elsewhere.

In fact, he almost had one this summer with the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately for Kaepernick, his girlfriend felt the need to share an incendiary tweet that depicted the Ravens owner as if he was a slave trader before they inked the deal. Hence, the Ravens decided Kaepernick may not be the best fit for them.

To make the collusion claims all the more difficult to prove, we need to look no further than the recent furor over the anthem that enveloped the NFL. While Kaepernick is out of the league, he left behind the concept of anthem protests, which many other players have taken a liking to. After President Donald Trump expressed his displeasure with the protests, they grew even further. Fast forward to today, and the whole issue of protesting the anthem is inching closer towards a resolution. Players and league officials are working together in constructive fashion, and there’s nary a pig sock to be found.

In a nutshell, Kaepernick and company have their work cut out for them on a lot of fronts. It’s unclear if they have plans to take a knee here and there to make things go a little smoother.
