Judge Responds To Jill Stein’s Demands That Trump/Clinton Ballots Be Recounted

It's going to be a long weekend for ballot counters in Michigan, as the recount demanded by Green Party candidate Jill Stein is set to begin. Some question Stein's motives considering a recount isn't going to change the outcome of the election. Stein's camp defends their rights.

Stein formally filed the appropriate paperwork and processing fees for a recount on Wednesday. This is the third state in which Stein has demanded a recount, as the environmentalist has also filed in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

Stein's camp feels the recounts are warranted because in some districts the actual vote differed greatly from the polling that predicted results.

“After a presidential election tarnished by the use of outdated and unreliable machines and accusations of irregularities, people of all political persuasions are asking if our election results are reliable,” said Stein. “We must recount the votes so we can build trust in our election system. We need to verify the vote in this and every election so that Americans can be sure we have a fair, secure and accurate voting system.”

Candidates have a right to contest the recount within seven days of the request being filed. President Elect Donald Trump, who won Michigan by a very slim margin, says they do plan to contest a hand count and will recommend a machine count instead.

The recount is cutting it close to the deadline. All states must have their election results counted by December 13. The first count took Michigan three weeks. Contesting the recount could result in delays and it's unclear what the course of action would be decided.

Of note, Wisconsin Judge Bailey-Rihn has ruled that she will allow the 19 counties to recount all ballots, but the method used is up to each individual county.

She stated, "I just do not find clear and convincing evidence and that is my decision. I'm going to allow the 19 counties to do the recall the way that they intended. Again, I think everyone would strongly encourage them to do the hand recount."
