Judge Decides To Lighten The Mood - Lets Man's Son Pick His Punishment

Heading to traffic court can be a gigantic pain in the neck, as it’s not the kind of experience that lends itself to being over with quickly. While you may have to arrive in court at a certain time, so do plenty of other people. Typically, you’ll find that you’re one of many waiting to get it over with on your assigned day. Parents of small children can be left with no choice but to bring them along for what could be a lengthy experience, and that can amount to an educational experience for both parent and child.

As the Independent Journal Review shares, Rhode Island’s Providence Municipal Court Judge Frank Caprio has been around the block several dozen times, as he’s served on the bench since 1985. Caprio is one of those rare judges that goes out of his way to connect with the community as opposed to instilling the fear of God in residents, and it looks like he has a gigantic soft spot for little ones. A father was in court to answer for a parking violation, and he had brought his five-year-old son along with him.

He owns a pizza parlor in the area, and he had illegally parked while making a delivery. That’s a big no-no regardless of the circumstances, and it appears like the man didn’t have the benefit of running into an understanding cop. The man would finally have his turn to answer, and Caprio decided he needed some help with his decision.

“But this time, he did something a little different. One father showed up to court to answer to a traffic violation - but Judge Caprio decided that the defendant's son Jacob should make the big decision,” IJR shares. “I have three choices. I can fine him $90, I can charge him $30, or I can charge him nothing. What do you think I should do?”

Jacob mulled things over a bit, and then he came up with an intriguing solution to this perplexing problem.

"He shifted the microphone to Jacob who, after a second’s pause, decreed a $30 fine. Caprio praised his middle-of-the-road choice, but thought of something better: If his father agreed to take Jacob out to breakfast – but 'I want you to order a lot of stuff,' he noted – the judge would dismiss the ticket altogether,” Inspire more shares. “Is that a good deal?” the 79-year-old judge asked Jacob. “Yeah, ’cause I love bacon,” the youngster replied.

We’ll assume dad was pretty content to walk away with a nominal fine and an order to spend some quality time with his son. We would imagine the father-and-son duo’s adventures in court were a huge conversation piece over breakfast. No word on how much bacon Jacob got to eat.

As for Caprio, he seems like a gigantic credit to his community. Being a judge and listening to excuses all day is not the easiest thing in the world, and that can lead to those that sit on the bench becoming jaded. Caprio has managed to stay remarkably centered, and that’s a tough trick to pull off in any line of work.
