INXS Guitarist Longs For The Days When Slapping A Woman On The Butt Was Ok

Of the many things that have become readily apparent in the wake of a countless number of sexual harassment scandals, one of the more telling has been the fact that many folks haven’t evolved all that much in their line of thinking. Putting the scandals aside for a moment, one would think that there’s a clear understanding of a couple of things by the vast majority of the civilized world.

First, the concept of personal boundaries is something that most folks catch onto around preschool age. There’s no need to get all handsy with someone you’re not close with, as such behavior is frowned upon. Next up, continually badgering someone for sexual favors when they have absolutely zero interest in engaging in them with you is wrong on a number of different levels - not to mention downright pathetic. Finally, one should never force themselves on another unwilling participant in a sexual manner. There’s no wiggle room on this. In fact, it’s a crime.

This is all common knowledge, isn’t it? Based on the overwhelming number of scandals that have broken in recent times, we have to seriously question whether that’s the case or not. An unfathomable number of men in positions of power have engaged in some unconscionable behavior, and their legacies have been destroyed as a result. That’s a small price to pay when you consider the toll their actions have taken on the victims, and we can only hope this so-called day of reckoning will weed out this behavior once and for all.

As the scandals have ripped across the headlines, there has been an endless amount of commentary on them. Unsurprisingly, a ton of head scratching thoughts have been shared, and those thoughts further call into question exactly how many folks have missed out on some rather simple life lessons. It appears like there’s a whole lot of folks that have, and we have another entry to the list. As the Daily Mail shares, INXS guitarist Kirk Pengilly has raised a ton of eyebrows with his assessment of the current environment.

“I really loved the 60s and 70s when life was so simple and you could slap a woman on the butt and it was taken as a compliment, not as sexual harassment,” he said.

Oh. Please, tell us more, Mr. Pengilly. Actually, hold that thought - you’ve said plenty. We’re going to go out on a limb and assume that Pengilly could use a refresher on a couple of things, but there’s still a question that needs to be asked. In the current climate, who in their right mind thinks that such a statement is an appropriate thing to share?

For context, Pengilly was at a Movember charity event in Melbourne when he was asked for some thoughts on the allegations that have been leveled against a number of prominent entertainment figures. His first thought was to lament a time when he could aggressively place his hands on the derriere of a woman that he found to be attractive. Sadly, it’s another sign that the evolution of society as a whole has been grossly overstated.
