Intelligent Labrador Helped Bust Subway Spokesman

If it wasn't for a well-trained dog, police would not have found a thumb drive former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle hid that contained images of child pornography. Last week, Jared Fogle agreed to a plea deal and will spend around five years in prison for possessing child porn and traveling to have sex with minors. There are only five dogs in the country specifically trained to find electronic data devices, one of them was used successfully during a July 7 raid of Fogle's home.

This week, NBC was able to catch up with Bear, a two-year-old black Labrador and his handler, Anderson, as well as deputy fire chief Todd Jordan who shared the events that took place before catching Fogle. Jordan rescued Bear a year ago and trained him to smell the components of electronic media. In addition, Bear is unique because he is trained to find things such as micro-cards.

Jordan told NBC, “Labs are the best on this… They’ll do anything to please their owner." Lead prosecutor on Fogle’s case, Steven DeBrota, said Bear was “a key part of the team.” The Seattle Police Department just purchased Bear for $9,500, the cost of training. Jordan also plans to train more dogs using his techniques to give them to other police departments around the United States.
