Illinois High School Placed American Flag On Ground As Part Of Art Exhibit

A high school has been praised and criticized after it displayed Old Glory on the ground during a school-wide art exhibit. The controversial display, featuring an American flag spread out along the ground, was a key feature of the exhibit and was designed to recreate a similar art piece from 1989.

On the day of the art exhibition, the school’s principal, Erin DeLuga penned a lengthy Facebook post to explain the meaning behind the display, telling parents that the American Flag section was designed to “explore the complexities of the constitutionally protected right of free speech by examining real cases."

The entire Facebook post read:

“Dear Parents,

Today, all sophomore students engaged in an interdisciplinary forum integrating their experiences in social science and English. The purpose of the forum was to explore the complexities of the constitutionally protected right of free speech by examining real cases. One of the cases was a recreation of Dread Scott's "What is the proper way to display a U.S. Flag?"

This particular display featured the flag on the ground. This is in no way meant to disrespect the flag, the military, or the government; rather, it was used for students to reconcile their feelings about current issues and whether their 1st Amendment rights are protected. These are difficult conversations when challenging students to think critically about issues that are relevant to them, school, and society.

We want you and your student to understand that we have these conversations in the school environment to foster greater conversations when they are in the community. At 3 PM today, two of our students will fold the flag and turn it over to a representative from the Elmhurst American Legion to ensure that it would be retired respectfully in accordance with proper flag etiquette.

We thank you for your continued support as we help students navigate the world around them.

Erin DeLuga”

However, since Principal DeLuga posted on Facebook, the school in question, York Community High School, has been slammed by parents and members of the community, with many people expressing their outrage that the American flag was touching the ground.

Unsurprisingly, the school’s Facebook account had been overwhelmed by angry commenters. "Absolutely disgraceful. The flag should never touch the ground,” emphasized Patti Sotos. "Pick the flag up! What a disgrace," wrote Meghan Marie. "You should never use the flag in that manner," repeated Abby Huntsman.

The incident became so heated that it was eventually reported to a local Fox affiliate. The next morning, Fox and Friends aired a brief segment on the issue. During the report, Steve Doocy agreed with York Community High parents, saying: "If you wanted to recreate something from 1989, there are pictures of it. Just show the picture. Don't actually put a flag on the ground. You're not supposed to do that."

Similar outrage has been vented by hundreds of online commenters and social media users. “This angers me. As a wife of a combat veteran, it makes my blood boil!! If you don't respect our country, flag and anthem. Then please move!” wrote Tracy Worthen on Fox.
