Most of us head to the store and run the credit or debit card through without giving it much thought. It's become completely routine. Criminals are taking advantage of the fact that we're not paying attention.
Card 'skimmers' have been found placed on the credit/debit card machines at two Walmarts in two different states. These skimmers are almost imperceptible, but if you run your card through them they'll steal all your information.
In one Fort Wright, Kentucky Walmart, the skimmers were in place for a full week before store associates caught on. This puts thousands of customers at risk.
Police Chief Dan Kreinest says the thieves put the skimmers in the self-checkout machines, but investigators believe video surveillance has given them a lead. “To go inside a store like Walmart that has a lot of surveillance equipment and install a skimmer is pretty bold,” he said. “They actually parked off-site, so we’re pretty certain that’s who we’re looking for.”
Fraud reports increased at the local credit unions in Kentucky, as well as in Virginia. Investigators found skimmers had been placed in a store in Alexandria as well.
“We are working with law enforcement authorities to investigate this activity and are taking additional steps to help ensure that our customers’ transactions are safe, including increasing store inspections,” said a Walmart spokesperson.
