If You Get This Check From Walmart In The Mail, Throw It Away Immediately (Photos)

Yet another scam aimed at stealing the identity of unsuspecting people has been unleashed, and this one is specifically targeting Walmart shoppers. According to the Independent Journal, the scam lures people in via the arrival of a surprise check.

Checks are being mailed to consumers that invite them to a secret shopper program at Walmart. Recipients are encouraged to deposit the funds, do a little ‘secret’ shopping and report back findings, and then keep the balance of the funds as a courtesy for performing the service.

The mailbox money looks pretty official and even provides recipients with their own user name and password to access the secret shopper site, but it turns out to be yet another scam. Recipients that deposit the checks will quickly find that their bank account has been depleted by the scammers, who are able to access their account once the check has been deposited.

The scam has gained enough traction that even Walmart was forced to address the matter via a statement on its corporate website.

“This mystery shopper scam uses fraudulent offers, fake checks and wire transfers to persuade unsuspecting consumers into sending money to fraudsters who are often located outside the U.S,” the statement reads in part.
