Husband Mourning His Wife of 60 Years Finds Message She Left Behind

For some couples, marriage ends in divorce. Couples will tell you what a hard time that can be between all the drama and legal issues that they have to wade through before they can move on. There's only one way that a marriage ends that's even harder than divorce, though.

When a couple keeps their vows and remains in love, but death finally parts them. When this happens, moving forward alone is not the refreshing new start to which a surviving spouse looks forward; it's more like facing a scary, lonely sentence of indefinite length.

One elder gentleman was struggling with the prospect of going on alone. His wife of 60 years passed away, and he was devastated by the loss. He didn't know how he was going to go on, but then he found support from the most unlikely source: his late wife.

Well, maybe it wasn't so shocking that Billie Breland comforted her husband, Jimmy, after she died. After all, she'd had the job of being Jimmy's comforter and best friend for most of her life-- nearly 60 years. Jimmy just didn't expect it, as his grandson explains.

Cliff Sims shared the touching story of his Granddaddy and Mimi, Jimmy and Billie, on Yellow Hammer News. The Birmingham, Alabama couple had a long and happy marriage, and were surrounded by family and love, when there was an accident. Billie had been in pretty good health overall, but one day she took a fall and broke her hip.

Billie had to get surgery, which went well, but Billie's memory had been slipping in recent years. Spending time in the rehabilitation facility made things worse because she couldn't recognize her surroundings. This led to her being more and more confused, and her memory slipped even more. Soon, she was experiencing dizzy and fainting spells.

The family thought that when Billie went home again, she would get better. Jimmy looked forward to taking his wife back home with him. He started spending his days at the hospital, taking care of her as he always had.

Sadly, Billie never got to go home with Jimmy; she passed away one night at the rehab center.

Billie was a retired school teacher, and she was also a preacher's wife, so she had touched a lot of lives. The community was saddened by her death, and hundreds of people flocked to the funeral home to pay their last respects. The family was devastated, but no one was having a harder time than Jimmy.

Jimmy was going through Billie's things. His wife loved to write notes to herself, and others. She had beautiful handwriting, and a habit of keeping track of details. He found many of her notes around the house of quotes she loved or things she needed to do.

Then, tucked into her checkbook, he found a note she left for him.

"Please don't cry because I died," the note read. "Smile because I lived! Know that I'm in a happy place! Know that we will meet again! I'll see you there!"

Sims said his grandfather and all the family were comforted by the message. "And it perfectly sums up the hope and comfort that comes with knowing you'll meet again in eternity," he wrote.
