Hugh Hefner's Widow Says Former Playboy Founder Lost Hearing Due To Viagra

With the passing of Hugh Hefner on Wednesday, the world is just a little bit less sexy. The Playboy founder died in his home in Los Angeles, California at the age of 91. According to his widow, Hefner paid a hefty price for his virility. For years, the magazine publisher used Viagra so he could keep performing in the bedroom, but the drug might have cost him his hearing.

Viagra patients may want to take note that there is a strange side effect to the drug: loss of hearing. According to Crystal Harris, the widow of Hefner, her husband had severe hearing loss in one ear, and the erectile dysfunction drug was responsible.

Many other former lovers of Hefner have come forward to confirm this. Karissa Shannon, Hefner's ex, says that Viagra led to Hefner using hearing aids. He needed people to lean in and talk right into his ear in order for him to hear them. Even sitting right next to a person wasn't close enough.

Hefner, in his later years, gave up the drug due to the toll it took on his hearing, his wife Harris reported.

Viagra carries several potential side effects, and some of those involve hearing problems. In addition to hearing loss, Viagra patients may develop tinnitus. With tinnitus, patients develop a constant ringing, buzzing or hissing sound in the ear. For some people, it can be temporary; for others, it can be a chronic problem.

It's not clear exactly how Viagra contributes to hearing loss. Some experts believe the hearing problem is caused by Viagra increasing blood flow to the ears. Many doctors fail to explain to patients the risks when prescribing Viagra.

Since most men who take Viagra are aging, and hearing loss is a common symptom of aging, it can be hard to distinguish whether a patient's hearing issues are actually caused by the drug or if they would have occurred naturally anyway. But researchers have found that Viagra users, young and old, have suffered some kind of hearing loss.

According to the FDA, in many cases of Viagra patients suffering hearing loss, the problem is just temporary. In fact, much of men suffer only a temporary loss, and for many, their hearing will return within hours of the drug wearing off. Still, the damage, however, can have lasting effects, especially with prolonged use. It’s a gamble.

The NIH put out a statement saying, "There needs to be more awareness of this disabling side effect among healthcare professionals responsible for prescribing this drug."

Viagra can also cause runny nose, photosensitivity, indigestion, loss of vision, headaches, dizziness and fainting spells. Men should be aware of all the potential side effects before making the decision to take the drug.

Hefner, not surprisingly, was willing to take the risk, at least for a while. Karissa says that he told her, "He said he would rather have sex than have his hearing."
