Hugh Hefner's Burial Plans Revealed

Another legend has left the world, and tributes are pouring in from all over the place. Hugh Hefner, the legendary founder of Playboy magazine, has passed away at the age of 91 due to natural causes. To say that Hefner had an eventful life would be an understatement, as he built an empire and lifestyle that was the envy of plenty of men around the world. As the New York Daily News shares, Hefner’s final resting place has been revealed, and it has raised some eyebrows.

Hefner has long-planned to be buried next to Marilyn Monroe at the Westwood Village Memorial Park in Los Angeles. He purchased the crypt next to Monroe’s back in 1992, and he reportedly ponied up a whopping $75,000 for it. Hefner discussed his reasoning for it during an interview with his own magazine back in 2000.

"Jay Leno suggested that if I was going to spend that kind of money, I should actually be on top of her. But to me there's something rather poetic in the fact that we'll be buried in the same place,” Hefner explained. “And that cemetery also has other meanings and connections for me. Friends like Buddy Rich and Mel Torme are buried there. So is Dorothy Stratten."

So what’s the connection with Monroe? She graced the cover of the inaugural issue of Playboy in 1953, and the rest is history. Sales took off, and Hefner’s small business that he started from his kitchen table was suddenly a big deal. Playboy was part of the culture from that point on, and Hefner grew to the point that he was a pop culture icon. He became pals with a who’s who of entertainment, and his parties at the Playboy mansion became the stuff of legends.

While the magazine was mainly known for featuring stunning women in various states of undress, it was also no slouch in the journalism department. Hefner’s son, Cooper, now serves as chief creative officer at Playboy Enterprises, and he released a statement upon his father’s death.

“My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom,” the statement read. “He defined a lifestyle and ethos that lie at the heart of the Playboy brand, one of the most recognizable and enduring in history.”

The Playboy brand remains strong, but it has had its share of struggles in the digital age. There was actually a decision to remove nudity from its publications, but the company reversed course on that choice. Tributes have been coming in from a wide swath of famous faces, ranging all the way from reality magnate Kim Kardashian to Rev. Jesse Jackson. Hefner reportedly passed away at home while surrounded by loved ones. Thoughts and prayers go out to those that were close with Hefner, who certainly made his mark on the world during his lengthy life.
