Hotel Rooms Removing Bible Thanks to Atheist Organization

For more than a century, every hotel room in the nation was guaranteed to have a Gideon Bible in the nightstand drawer. This long-standing tradition may be coming to an end, courtesy of your friendly Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF).

The Gideons International, a missionary service, vowed to ensure everyone would have 'the ability to encounter the word of God.' The organization began putting the Bible in hotel rooms in Montana in 1908. Since then, Gideon Bibles can be found not only in every hotel room but also in hospitals and prisons.

Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker, a married couple who co-lead the FFRF, had a letter sent to the director of the Holmes Student Center Hotel at Northern Illinois University. The couple claimed that putting a Bible in the university hotel implies that NIU endorses a specific religious text.

"Including Bibles sends the message to non-Christian and non-religious guests that they should read the Bible, and specifically the version of the bible provided: the Gideon Bible.”

Without complaints, NIU removed the Bibles from all hotel rooms. The FFRF was 'grateful' for the compliance. Gaylor went on to criticize the Bible: “The Bible calls for killing nonbelievers, apostates, gays, ‘stubborn sons,’ and women who transgress biblical double standards," said Gaylor. "What’s obnoxious in a private hotel, however, becomes inappropriate and unconstitutional in state-run lodgings.”

The University of Wisconsin and University of Iowa have followed suit at their hotels.

Could this be the end of an era for the Gideons International?
