Hotel In Hot Water After What They Asked Jewish Guests To Do

A hotel has sparked outrage after its request aimed specifically at Jewish guests was made public.

The Paradies apartment hotel in the Alpine village of Arosa in eastern Switzerland finds itself in the midst of a controversy, and the hotel is solely responsible for it. Allegations of anti-Semitism are flying about, and it’s not too hard to see why. As the Daily Mail shares, an unfathomable sign that was posted by hotel management has been uploaded and shared on social media.

“To our Jewish Guests, Please take a shower before you go swimming. If you break the rules, I am forced to cloes (sic) the swimming pool for you. Thank you for your understanding,” the sign read.

Needless to say, the sign sparked a ton of outrage. Paradies manager Ruth Thomann admits her choice of words left a lot to be desired, but she claims she only posted the sign because other hotel guests complained that some guests were using the pool without showering first.

“I wrote something naive on that poster,” she said.

You think? Her explanation is not holding much weight, and a whole slew of sides have weighed in to condemn the hotel for its actions.

“Unfortunately, anti-Semitism in Europe is still a reality, and we must make sure that the punishment for incidents such as these will serve as deterrents for those who still harbor the germ of anti-Semitism,” said Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely.

Markus Berger, a spokesman for Swiss tourism, acknowledges the ugliness of the words on the sign, but he says it’s in no way indicative of the views of the nation as a whole.

“It always needs to stay in perspective,” Berger said. “This is one unfortunate incident.”

Switzerland’s foreign ministry has issued a statement in response to the outrage, noting that the country “condemns racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination in any form.”

“Switzerland has been strongly committed for years — as it is at the moment, for example, within its presidency for the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance — to raise awareness to the dangers of racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination,” according to the statement.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre, a prominent Jewish rights group, has expressed outrage over the incident. The group is calling for Switzerland to 'close hotel of hate and penalize its management.' The group has also called on Booking.com to remove the hotel from its listings, and for the company to 'explain the anti-Semitic cause of the removal on your website.' That prompted a response.

“At Booking.com, we do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. We can confirm that the property in question is no longer available on Booking.com,” a statement read in part.

Shimon Samuels, The centre's head of international relations, took things a step further by explaining that “the reference to 'showers' can be construed as a patently vicious reference to the fake shower hands in the gas chambers.”

This matter is clearly not going away quietly, and we’ll have to wait and see what that means for the hotel and its management team in the future.
