Homeowner Makes Shocking Discovery During Renovations (PHOTOS)

A Wiltshire resident began digging up the yard with the intent to lay electric lines below ground. He was stunned to discover an ancient mosaic-- and that was just the beginning.

Luke Irwin called in archaeologists after he found the mosaic on his property that appeared ancient. It turned out that the remains of a Roman villa lay beneath his garden.

“This site has not been touched since its collapse 1400 years ago and, as such, is of enormous importance. Without question, this is a hugely valuable site in terms of research, with incredible potential," said Dr. David Roberts, Historic England archeologist. “The discovery of such an elaborate and extraordinarily well-preserved villa, undamaged by agriculture for over 1500 years, is unparalleled in recent years. Overall, the excellent preservation, large scale and complexity of this site present a unique opportunity to understand Roman and post-Roman Britain.”

Sadly, the amazing find has been re-buried. It would be too costly right now to excavate it.

Roberts is hoping to go back one day and carry out a proper dig, but it may take time to raise the funds. For now, it's better to keep it covered than to risk destroying the find.
