Home Depot Issues An Apology, Removes Halloween Display That Was Seen As Offensive (Photos)

Halloween decor has long gone a bit overboard. As film, literature and video games continue to glorify violence and try to out-do each other, the public has become desensitized. Most people think nothing of seeing bloody dismembered limbs or severed rotting heads sitting on people's lawns in October. One decoration might have gone just a bit too far, though.

Home Depot announced they'll be pulling a decoration called the 'Scary Peeper Creeper' from their shelves. The store received complaints from a Toronto resident, who says the decoration made light of voyeurism, a serious crime.

The decoration features a creepy looking face with two hands cupped around it and a hood over the back of the head. The life-sized rubber decoration looks extremely life-like. It comes equipped with a suction cup so that people can attach it to a window. From inside, it looks like someone is standing outside and peeping through the glass.

The manufacturer markets it as a funny prank. On a dark night, the unexpected sight of this thing staring into your window is more likely to terrify someone.

Since voyeurism behavior often contributes to sexual harassment and rape, some people just don't think it's funny at all.

"We agree that this is not in line with our core values, and when we heard, took immediate action and are currently in the process of removing this product from our assortment," said Home Depot spokeswoman Emily DiCarlo.

Breanne Hunt-Wells, the woman who complained about the decoration, is pleased with the decision. She has a message for those who feel her concern was an over-reaction. "I would say to people that say 'it's just a joke' there are a lot of things in our society that have been just a joke over time," she said. "Racial jokes, cultural jokes. It takes some talking and thinking to realize that maybe we need to be more sensitive. The people that commit this crime are not harmless people."
