Historic Sears DIY Home Gets A Modern Makeover

The Do-It-Yourself movement goes back a long way. It turns out that Sears Roebuck & Co used to sell DIY homes back in the early 1900s.

That’s right, Sears actually sold DIY home kits so that you could build your very own house.

In fact, Sears homes were available in a variety of models, from small bungalows to larger, multi-story homes. The homes were assembled based on a plan, but it was possible to customize various aspects of the house to suit your personal taste

People have obviously been building their own homes for many centuries. Moreover, many millions of people have built their own house, in many cases without a great deal of training or experience in constructing a home.

The way ahead of its time development team at Sears made the job much, much easier with their selection of models of various sizes, pre-drawn blueprints, and even offered pre-sized materials.

In a testament to the durability of theses Sears DIY homes, Reddit user RealHotSauceBoss recently renovated his family’s 100-year-old house in rural North Dakota, which is one of the few remaining examples of the over 75,000 DIY homes that Americans bought from Sears between 1908 and 1940.
