High School Student Stuns Mom With Who He's Taking To The Prom

Prom season can be just as stressful for parents as it is for their kids. Between making sure your kid knocks it out of the park with their choice of attire for the evening to ensuring you instill the need for them to make good decisions on their big night, parents can find themselves with an overwhelming sense of relief once it’s over. Additionally, there’s the little matter of who their date will be for the evening, and that can bring all sorts of problems to the table.

As ABC News shares, this mom from Ohio had little choice but to approve of her son’s prom date. Trey Potter, 18, decided he was going to bring his mom to thank her for all of the sacrifices she has made for him through the years.

“After surviving a tumultuous childhood and an even harder time while in foster care, I immediately transitioned into being a teen mother,” Melissa Roshan explained. “Seeing all my friends around me go to prom … was incredibly difficult. Part of me really wanted to go, but I knew I had a baby that needed me. And that became my reason for finding peace in missing out.”

The stunned mom would, of course, say yes, but she was careful not to hog up the spotlight on her son’s big night.

“I felt like an old grandma initially! But I enjoyed my time once I let myself just be a kid again,” she continued. “I decided to leave after an hour so that I would not hog up too much of the night. Then I went home and slept in happy peace. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.”

As for Trey, the decision to bring the most important woman in his life was a no brainer.

“My mom is one of the most inspirational people I know,” he said. “After all she’s sacrificed and been through, I felt taking her was the least I could do.”

This is an incredibly touching story, as there are few teens that would make such a touching decision as they prepared for one of the biggest nights of their young lives. That being said, many kids get it more than we realize, and they truly appreciate all of the sacrifices their parents make for them. Trey knew this was an extra special set of circumstances, and he decided to do a little sacrificing himself. For Melissa, while missing out on her own prom was a bit disappointing, she wouldn’t change the way turned out for anything in the world.

"I didn't miss out on prom. I gained, When I made the choice to have [Trey], I knew I was going to 'miss' a lot of things but when you choose love, it's a gain and it's all worth it,” she said. “And I truly mean that."

Based on the amazing pics of mom and her son absolutely beaming, it looks like they had a fantastic time. Trey’s selfless act is one for the record books, and mom can take plenty of credit as well for raising such a fine young man.
