High School Football Team Does The Unthinkable During National Anthem

A high school football team in Seattle is joining in the protest of the national anthem. Students, coaches and school officials knelt during the anthem and claim they will do so for the rest of the season.

Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers was the first football star to gain national attention for protesting the 'Star-Spangled Banner.' The quarterback took a knee, and when questioned later he told reporters it was in protest.

Kaepernick was quickly joined by other NFL stars, as well as athletes in other sports. The controversy has been raging about the practice ever since.

The football team at Garfield High School are now protesting along with their football heroes en masse. The entire team, as well as their team officials, plan to kneel in silent protest for the national anthem for the entire season.

Head Coach Joey Thomas says this is what the students wanted to do, though he supports the protest '110 percent.' According to Thomas, no disrespect is meant toward the military.

“It’s because they are over there fighting for our rights that we can stand for what we believe in. It’s because of our military that we can have this silent protest,” he said.

A Seattle Public Schools spokesperson says that the school supports the students First Amendment rights to protest.
