Here's The Name ISIS Hates Being Called

Occasionally you'll notice politicians call the Islamic State by the word 'Daesh.' Do you know what it means? If you do, then you know why people use it to refer to the terrorist organization, and why IS jihadists hate it.

Secretary of State John Kerry referred to ISIS as Daesh in several addresses. French President Francois Hollande promised 'will be unforgiving with the barbarians from Daesh' after the attacks on Paris. Daesh is a word that seems to be catching on in popularity in the Western world.

Members of ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) have actually threatened to 'cut out the tongue' of anyone calling them Daesh, according to the website Western Journalism.com.

Alice Guthrie, an Arabic translator, explains why ISIS members have such a strong reaction to the word. It's apparently a derogatory term.

Daesh is an acronym from the English words for ISIS, D.A.E.SH, which translate to 'a bigot.'

"They hear it, quite rightly, as a challenge to their legitimacy: a dismissal of their aspirations to define Islamic practice, to be 'a state for all Muslims' and — crucially — as a refusal to acknowledge and address them as such," Guthrie explains.

Guthrie discourages the use of the word, likening it to calling Germans 'Huns.' But many world leaders are adopting it because they feel it's quite appropriate.

"Daesh hates being referred to by this term, and what they don’t like has an instinctive appeal to me," said Tony Abbott, Australia’s prime minister, who uses the term now in place of ISIS.
