Here’s What It Means If You Find A Coin Stuck In Your Car Door

Enterprising thieves across the nation seem to a never-ending supply of tricks up their sleeves. There are all kinds of scams out there designed to separate you and your loved ones from their possessions, and the unfortunate reality is that won’t be changing anytime soon. As a result, it’s important to always be aware of the latest and greatest scam that attempts to make you a vulnerable target. Like this one.

As Mad World News shares, one of the latest ones making the rounds revolves around something you may see stuck in your car door. In short, if you see a coin stuck in your car door handle, it’s not a sign that bright things are ahead or that your luck has changed. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. Prowling thieves are sticking coins in car doors to essentially mark them for theft, and that theft could happen as soon as you return home.

While it doesn’t work with all makes and models, there are certain cars in which sticking a coin in the passenger handle will make it easy pickings for thieves to gain access. The coin can block the automatic locking mechanism from activating on that side, and thieves can essentially walk right in and help themselves.

Even more disturbing, the thieves are typically watching to see who doesn’t catch it - and they follow those unsuspecting folks home. Since it’s on the passenger side door, it’s pretty easy to see how it goes undetected by solo drivers. Someone that’s leaving work for the day or finishing up some errands likely has getting home as fast as possible at the top of their minds, and as a result, they are paying little attention to their surroundings.

That leaves them vulnerable in many ways, and this is just the latest danger you need to be aware of. A quick lap around your vehicle before taking off can help put an end to this scam and make sure you’re not the target of a thief with far too much time on their hands.
