He Cut Off Her Hands Because They Were Having Issues Conceiving - Then They Find Out Why

A woman in Kenya suffered unthinkable domestic violence because she didn't bear her husband any children. According to reports, he's the one who is infertile.

Jackline Mwende, 27, has terrible scars that go from her temple down to her lips. She has multiple scars on her scalp. Worst of all, she has no hands. Her arms end in bandaged stumps. As tragic as her condition is, what makes it all the more tragic is that her husband is the one who did it to her.

Stephen Ngila, 35, hacked his wife with a machete because after five years she had not given him any children.

In 2014, the couple went to a hospital and learned that he was infertile. “So the doctor advised him to attend the clinic, but he never went," explains Mwende. "Every time I reminded him to attend the clinic, he would dismiss it. He would say, ‘I will see if I will get time to go,’ then he would never go.”

In time, Ngila's bitterness grew. He drank, he became abusive and he blamed Mwende for their lack of children. One day he blew up.

“I saw him, and he told me: ‘Today is your last day,’” Mwende says. “I never thought something like this would happen to me.”

Under new laws enacted last year in Kenya, domestic violence is now illegal. Ngila has been arrested, but his family are defending him. They say Mwende was attacked by a business rival.
