Have You Ever Seen A Bag Of Pennies In Water Outside A Home? The Reason Is Genius!

When summertime comes, many people look forward to spending more time outdoors, barbecuing, swimming and lounging. Unfortunately, with the outdoors in the summer comes the flies. Flies can be enough to make you want to move the party back into the kitchen.

The internet, as we all know, has a solution for everything. It’s no different in this situation; a little googling and you'll find hundreds of ways to keep flies at bay. The most popular remedy (and the oldest) requires nothing but a few shiny pennies and a baggie. How it works is a mystery still, but there are people who swear by it.

There are many versions of this fly-repellant remedy floating around, but one of the most popular ones calls for a handful of brand new pennies, lemon juice (to keep the pennies shiny) and salt. Just put the ingredients in a clear plastic baggie and add water. Zip it shut and hang it in the yard (a paper clip comes in handy for that).

The shiny pennies in water are supposed to scare those pesky little winged intruders away. Some speculate the reflection confuses them. Others speculate the flies mistake it for a nest of some kind of other insect they fear. One story says the water bags act something like a funhouse mirror; the flies see their distorted reflection in the water and run off in fear.

No one knows if it works, but people swear to it in internet testimonies. Since it costs only pennies, you might as well try it—you can always take the pennies back.
