Have These Candles? Throw Them Away ASAP

That amazingly delicious citrus smelling candle your co-worker got you for Secret Santa could be slowly killing you. New research by Professor Alastair Lewis of the Nation Centre for Atmospheric Science at the University of York says scented candles could be emitting potentially toxic levels of formaldehyde.

Limonene, which gives candles their citrus scents, can mutate into formaldehyde when it makes contact with the air. According to Telegraph, limonene is safe to when used to flavor foods or in air fresheners. But when it reacts with naturally occurring ozone in the air, one of every two limonene molecules turns into formaldehyde.

“The really surprising thing is just how high the concentrations of some fragrances are now in people’s homes...Fragrance chemicals now completely dominate the inside of most homes,” Lewis told the Telegraph. “The issue is we don’t really know what the consequences of long-term exposure to formaldehyde are. It is a chemical that is known to harm you long-term,” he added

Formaldehyde is a human carcinogen and a toxic corrosive that may cause nosebleeds, sore throats, coughs and stinging eyes. You can reduce formaldehyde in your home by opening windows and doors, or get household plants, like English ivy or lavender, to absorb it.
