Haunting Tribute Video Reminds Us of the Heroes of September 11

A black-and-white YouTube video is going viral this month on the 15th anniversary of September 11. The video reminds us of the horrors that unfolded that autumn morning in New York City when planes hit the twin towers. It also reminds us of the people who gave their lives to help others.

On September 11, thousands of people ran away from ground zero in New York City. But hundreds more marched right up to the disaster as it unfolded, and prepared to give their lives for the victims of the tragedy. First responders with grim looks on their faces walked through the streets of New York toward the burning buildings.

A live news report describes the scene as the towers collapse. "You have to remember a lot of the police and fire who were the first to respond undoubtedly were still in the building," the reporter says as we watch the buildings crumble to rubble and dust fill lower Manhattan.

Many of the firefighters and police officers caught in that film were never seen alive again. A total of 343 firefighters and 60 officers were killed during their rescue mission that morning. As tragic as the loss is, it's impossible to imagine what the city would have done without them.
